Kindred Spirit Mailbox Damaged in Tropical Storm Ana

Bird Island NC Sunset Beach North CarolinaTropical Storm Ana seemed like a mild storm, but it seems that Bird Island received the brunt of it. The beloved Kindred Spirit Mailbox and a nearby memorial bench were washed away during the storm. A group dedicated to keeping up the mailbox quickly noticed that they were gone and combed the nearby beaches looking for them. They were found at the next jetty along the coastline.

It took several people and a couple of days but the bench and the mailbox were dragged back to their rightful spot on Bird Island. Just as they did in 2011, after Hurricane Isabelle, the friends of the mailbox are going to repair the damage done.

Volunteers are wanted to fix the landmark on Thursday, May 14th, 2015 at 8am. Volunteers can meet at the 40th Street Access on Sunset Beach, NC. All are welcome to help. If you have one handy, bring a shovel!

The Kindred Spirit Mailbox is such a special part of Sunset Beach and it’s not going anywhere without a fight!

Kindered Spirit Mailbox Repaired

After Hurricane Irene passed through our area Sunset Beach resident and author Jacqueline DeGroot was asked by the Guardian of the Kindred Spirit Mailbox to check mailbox as soon as she could.

She found that the dune in front had eroded somewhat leaving it in a precarious position and tilted.

The bench had fallen backward and had become uprooted.

So she began looking for volunteers to help relocate the Kindred Spirit mailbox to a more stable location. [Read more…]
