A group of volunteers have repaired the Kindred Spirit Mailbox on Bird Island in Sunset Beach, NC. The mailbox was washed away during Tropical Storm Ana. The Mailbox post (the original post that has been there for over 35 years) was knocked into the ocean by strong winds; the bench, donated anonymously (the donor was later revealed -see here), was also sent adrift in the storm. And the flagpole that marks the somewhat hidden spot was bent and the flag was lost.
The bench and mailbox were found in the jetty a few hundred yards away, luckily still in tact. They were brought ashore and returned to the area. After a few days of rallying volunteers, a group headed up by local author Jacqueline DeGroot set out to fix everything damaged in the storm. Armed with shovels, post-diggers, and a lot of spirit, they fixed it all in a few hours time. The storm might have tried to take the mailbox away, but the Kindred Spirit belongs at Sunset Beach.
If you can’t make it to the mailbox, you can leave your message on the virtual Kindred Spirit Mailbox notebook. To leave your entry visit www.TheKindredSpirit.net
